A Mummers Wife characters Ë eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB A Mummer's Wife tells the story of Kate Ede a bored Midlands housewife unhappily married to an asthmatic draper When a h. Now sudden as the splash of a stone dropped into a well the knowledge came to her that she was no longer happy that her life was no than a burden a misery Kate Ede lives a life of drudgery in Hanley Staffordshire She had never been out of the Potteries in her life born reared and married she had been here Beyond the awful circle of the hills all was as vague to her as beyond the sea banks is to the oyster When she was a young girl it had been decided for her that she should be a dressmaker Now she is living with her severely asthmatic husband Ralph and his mother Mrs Ede Whilst Kate loves and respects her mother in law the latter is excessively religious and is freuently heard to indignantly exclaim I m a Christian woman Husband Ralph is irritable and demanding Kate works all day and spends her nights attending to Ralph But then everything changes when Dick Lennox becomes a lodger in their homeDick a large handsome affable man is an actor and the manager of an itinerant group of mummers who specialises in opera buffa comic opera and is everything that Ralph isn t Much to Mrs Ede s concern Kate likes to snuggle up with a romance novel when she occasionally has a moment to herself Kate has some difficulty distinguishing between romantic fiction and reality and to her Dick is pretty much a knight in shining armour come to rescue her No spoiler here as this novel s title provides a clue The actor and his wife are really living people we see them in their surroundings and we see every detail of those surroundings What is most wonderful perhaps is the atmosphere Mr Moore when he turned from painting to literature preserved the essential uality of the painter He might have painted his impressions badly in oils in words he paints them well Arthur SymonsIrish author George Moore 1852 1933 who lived in Paris was like mile Zola a proponent of naturalism There are some echoes of Zola in this novel but Moore tones down the sex which is implied and only obliuely mentioned However Moore provides a wonderful character study of Kate a dressmaker taken from her own milieu and transplanted to another very different oneWe see an honest hardworking romantic and na ve young woman change and become confident but at the same time she goes through various stages of neediness and clinginess to full scale jealous rage Even though she at one stage has much of what she wishes for we see her self destruct and her degradation is terrible to behold Kate is a very tiresome woman but a very well realised tiresome woman The novel is roughly divided into three sections Life in Hanley with Ralph Life with Dick and the mummers The final stage as described aboveThis novel tackles issues of adultery guilt alcoholism jealousy and physical abuse It was at that time groundbreaking to discuss such matters in literature Although some of Moore s contemporaries such as Thomas Hardy George Gissing and George Meredith had also tested the bounds of reticence no reputable Victorian novelist had yet gone as far as Moore in consciously flouting the moral conventions of mid Victorian fiction Anthony Patterson Editor And Moore to combat those who stated that naturalism in fiction was deleterious to readers shows that popular romance fiction could also have a negative impact many of Kate s choices are based on what she has read Moore explores what happens to a woman who at that time leaves her husband and has the temerity to become involved with people who perform on stage Right towards the end Moore indulges in a very nice bit of irony There are also some wonderful descriptions of Hanley Streaks of purple and touches of yellow were dying out of the west and the wide grey slopes of the hills rendered insignificant and toylike the unending brick angles of the town Brick It was a sea of brick brick of all colours the pale brown of the decaying yards the implacable red brick that turns to purple of the newly built warehouses whilst overhead an uninterrupted succession of scarlet tiled roofs pointed their sharp backs to the light of a few wan stars Overhead the sky was one serene sheet of dazzling blue and so still was the air that the smoke clouds trailed like the wings of gigantic birds slowly balancing themselves Waves of white light rolled up the valley as if jealous of the red flashing furnaces An odour of iron and cinders poisoned the melting air and rose through it from the black gulf below like intestine exhalations from the open belly of a lately slaughtered animal A Mummer s Wife was published in 1885 Moore experienced some censorship particularly from circulating libraries Here are some extracts from contemporary reviews The Freeman regretted that Mr Moore should apply the great mental gifts and great literary gifts he possesses to the cultivation of this species of writing The Glasgow Herald believed that Moore had made a great mistake in writing a French realist novel The novel s surface fault of coarseness destroys whatever artistic virtues the novel possesses William Wallace in the Academy vehemently disapproved of what he called the mission of realism and thought the novel repulsive Henry James certainly disapproved of the extensive treatment of a dressmaker s life complaining in correspondence with Moore that the length of the novel was disproportionate to its subject In reply Moore uestioned whether the subject of A Portrait of a Lady 1881 which amounted to idle passionless Americans wandering over Europe in search of amusement was a worthier subject for the novel than the life of a work woman George Moore did extensive research for this novel Moore socialised with actors in the Gaiety Bar in London and travelled with a troupe of actors performing Les Cloches de Corneville He even co wrote a new libretto for the opera It seems to me that he had a prodigious knowledge of comic opera as evidenced in the excellent notes of this annotated edition Wo du auch bist into a well A Mummer s Wife 1885 is a novel I m pleased I read even though I can t say I wholly enjoyed the process of reading it I found George Moore s style rather turgid and his authorial editorializing a little heavy handed Whenever I risked being drawn into the novel and there are some powerful moments the author would start telling me what I should think of the protagonist Kate Ede in a way that detracted from my suspension of disbelief I also found the pacing rather slowOn the positive side the novel has considerable historical interest as a first attempt to translate Zola s uncompromising brand of social realism into English language fiction It was considered scandalous at the time in a way that is interestingly documented by the contemporary reviews included in the recent re edition by Victorian Secrets which is excellent see below It s a novel that you should ideally read without knowing the plot so I won t go into details other than to say that there are some genuinely remorseless and harrowing passages Moore does remorseless and harrowing very wellThere are some wonderful settings too I liked Moore s portrayal of the raffish hand to mouth world of travelling actors and I especially liked the opening seuence with its unusual setting in the Potteries Specifically it is set in a town called Hanley now absorbed into Stoke on Trent Moore seems fascinated on the one hand by the drabness of the town the perfect setting for Kate s drab married life which she seeks to escape through the Madame Bovary style romantic flights of fancy and on the other by the distant misty hills that lie beyond the chimneys evocatively portrayed in a couple of key scenes Arnold Bennett a native of Hanley credited Moore in a letter of 1920 for opening my eyes to the romantic nature of the district I had blindly inhabited for over twenty years and he hails him as the inspiration for his own Five Towns novels uite an accolade in my view Bennett is up there with George Gissing in my mental list of undeservedly semi forgotten British authors I was excited through this book to discover Victorian Secrets s list of little known nineteenth century fiction which is impressively presented from an editorial point of view with an apparatus to rival Oxford World s Classics They have a very intriguing selection of works available and I m sure this won t be the last I read
